ALIEN EXISTENCE

I am very confused that we are smart enough to land an automobile size payload on another planet, but still live in a culture where a significant percentage of people want to believe in implausible if not impossible things. DO YOU know why INTELLIGENT DOES NOT BELEIVE WEIRD THINGS.
A recent National Geographic Society poll reported that 36 percent of Americans -- about 80 million people -- believe UFOs exist, only 17 percent do not, and the rest of the people are undecided.
The survey did not specifically equate UFOs with flying saucers or little green men, however.
It's pretty unlikely a ghost will make a grand appearance on CNN, or we'll see an exorcism release the devil. But the discovery of aliens via a SETI signal might conceivably happen someday.
EGG SHAPED UFO

Fortunately, we'll be prepared because the NGS survey shows that 77 percent of Americans believe there are signs that aliens have already visited Earth. No doubt this is anchored in mystical themes that benevolent aliens came by and helped out early civilization on huge public works projects, such as the building of the Egyptian pyramids.

Only 13 percent of 1,114 respondents said they would be afraid of aliens harming them. Apparently sci-fi films such as "Independence Day" and "Signs" haven't made much of an impact. Nor has astrophysicist Stephen Hawking's warnings of ray-gun wielding aliens.

A public relations challenge for NASA and the U.S. military is that 80 percent in the NGS survey feel that the government is hiding information about UFOs. This percentage of government distrust is consistent with a 2009 CBS News poll that found that 77 percent of the population believes that the government covered-up the truth behind the 1963 John F. Kennedy assassination. On the flip side, belief that the Apollo moon landings were a government hoax dropped from 11 percent to 6 percent over the past decade.

#PHOTOS: Mars Curiosity 'Litter Bug' Spied from Orbit#

I'd say that UFO beliefs are fueled by a "secular theology" where people look for greater meaning to the universe and our relationship with it. The theme is that the aliens flying the UFOs pay attention to us, worry about our misdeeds (as evident in alleged sighting of UFOs hanging around nuclear power plants) and want to help raise us to a higher level of existence. This is simply a post-age version of ages old stores of visitation by angels, demons, and other imaginary spirits.

A UNFULLFILLED HYPOTHESIS
A few of my colleagues dismiss the SETI searches as an unscientific experiment that border on theology. We imagine aliens that are intellectually made in our image: they are as curious as we are, they build lasers or radio telescopes like we do, and they are similarly motivated to devote time and resources simply to letting us know that they exist among the stars. This is hypothesis on top of hypothesis.
ILLINOIS at 16-01-2012

Also, people simply love to believe in weird things just because it's fun. (As an example, simply listen to the audio track of the UFO sighting posted on the YouTube video shown above.) The staid, rational world described in physics, astronomy or biology 101 classes is a bore to most undergraduates.

SECTOR 15
This is exacerbated by the fact that students traditionally are taught what to think but not how to think, concludes Richard Walker and colleagues in a 2001 survey of 211 college students. One of the true/false questions was, "The government is hiding evidence of alien visitors at Area 51." Walker's conclusion: science knowledge is not an inoculation against accepting pseudoscientific gobbledygook.

What's more, fun ideas sell. Simply go to you neighborhood bookstore. Pseudoscience topics from astrology to parapsychology fill a lot more shelves than hard-core science books.

Microsoft Officially Signs Off On Windows 8, Releases It To Manufacturers

win8
THE WAIT IS OVER NOW... ALL WINDOWS LOVERS Right on schedule, Microsoft has just announced on its Windows Team blog that Windows 8 has emerged from its long development and testing phase, and will soon be in the hands of manufacturers and OEMs for installation on new PCs and devices.
Among those on the list to receive the final build (build 9200, if you were curious) are Lenovo, Acer, ASUS and Toshiba, though that’s clearly just the tip of a very large iceberg.
While average users won’t be able to get their collective hands on the new OS before its official launch on October 26, Microsoft revealed when certain subsets of users could access the final build. Developers can download Windows 8 via their MSDN subscriptions on August 15, as can IT professionals with their TechNet subscriptions — lucky devils.
In a separate blog post, Microsoft’s Stephen Sinofsky dives into greater detail about the RTM process and the steps that led up to it. One of the juicier tidbits Sinofsky addressed was just how many people participated in the Windows 8 preview program — over 16 million PCs took part in the preview, with a full 7 million of those PCs running on the company’s Release Preview build. Solid numbers for what the company has referred to as a substantial “reimagining” of Windows as we know it, and the company hopes that same sort of momentum carries over into retail sales.
With Windows 8 finally complete, Microsoft has begun to bring other parts of its ecosystem online. Take the Windows Store for instance — developers will soon able to submit paid apps into the new marketplace, though they’ll have to have their RTM builds installed and ready first. That said, Sinofsky was quick to note that “no software project is ever really ‘done,’” so the company will continue to monitor feedback from both users and its myriad hardware partners.

Robert H.Goddard The ROCKET MAN

Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) was an American physicist, engineer and the father of modern rocketry. He built the first liquid-fuelled rocket and his work was directly responsible for spaceflight. The story goes like this: As a 17-year-old boy in 1899, Goddard had a life-changing experience when he climbed a cherry tree, looked up at the stars and decided he would try to build a vehicle that could reach space, specifically Mars.

From that day, Goddard dedicated his life to achieving his crazy goal and celebrated that day every year as his ‘Anniversary Day’ – the day his life found its purpose.
Goddard went on to study physics, engineering and aerodynamics and spent the rest of his life calculating formula, researching data and painstakingly testing his designs. After Goddard published his most important paper in 1919, which stated the science behind his rockets and his belief that they could be used to explore space, he received harsh criticism from the press who thought his claims were a joke. After years of this type of criticism, Goddard escaped into his work, becoming more reclusive and eventually relocated to New Mexico where he could work in peace.
By the time of his death in 1945, the highest altitude one of his rockets reached was a fairly modest 2.7kms, but he had filed over 200 engineering patents and laid the groundwork for all of today’s rocket engines.
What an amazing man – this guy dedicated his entire life to a goal that he knew would never be achieved in his lifetime, made him look like a fool to the general public and a pariah to his colleagues. Yet his dream and conviction was so strong that he just kept working away at a thankless endeavour, never letting what other people said break his spirits.
You can watch a nice five-minute biography of Goddard in Carl Sagan’s CosmosClick here, it starts at the 17min mark.

Apple Lawyer Outs Internal Samsung Documents That Claim The iPhone Is “Easy To Copy”

The PATENT CASE BETWEEN APPLE AND IPHONE came for hearing trial in U.S. court...Today the first shots were fired in the high-profile U.S. patent war between Apple and Samsung, beginning with Apple’s opening statements.
And no punch was pulled — Apple’s lawyer made a few hard-hitting claims in the courtroom, providing documents that show Samsung thought the iPhone was “easy to copy.” Harold McElhinny (Apple’s lawyer) also showed documents prepared by a Samsung executive that claim that the company was in a “crisis of design” because of the iPhone.
The presentation also included images of Samsung’s design evolution between pre-iPhone time and now.
But despite the evidence, McElhinny’s most crushing blow may have come in the form of a simple and well-known tech adage: “As we all know, it is easier to copy than to innovate. Apple had already taken the risks.”
However, just saying the hardware is easily copied isn’t proof of copying it, which is why McElhinny returned to evidence introduced in pre-trial, depicting Samsung’s phones before 2007 and their phones after the iPhone’s debut.
Take a look:
According to McElhinny’s argument in court (via Reuters), the main question the court would have to answer was how Samsung went from the phones on the left to the phones on the right.
Apple argues that 22.7 million devices sold by Samsung are in violation of patent infringement, and that the company is seeking up to $2.525 billion in damages. Samsung will follow up in its opening statement later this afternoon.

London 2012 archery: The 3rd Olympics Google doodle of its kind

London 2012 archery Google doodle is the third time the sport has hit the bulls eye as far as Olympics related doodles are concerned.

The first archery related Google doodle was on September 18, 2000, day 4 of the Sydney Olympic games. The doodle represented a kangaroo taking aim at one of the letter Os in the Google logo.

olympics_doodle4.gifThe archery event at Sydney was held at the Sydney International Archery Park. The Korean team won three out of the four gold medals contested. Eight Olympic records and three world records were broken at the Sydney Olympics.

The day 5 of Athens Olympics, 17th August 2004, saw archery stake claim to another Google doodle. This doodle had a woman in traditional Greek dress taking aim.

summer2004_archery.gifThe archery competition at Athens was held at the Panathinaiko Stadium. The Korean team, again, won three out of the four gold medals contested. Four Olympic records and several other world records were broken at these games.

It will be interesting to see what sport finds its place in Sunday's Google doodle.

HOW SEARCH ENGINE WORKS

If you need to buy a product online and you do not know the exact website that is offering the same, what will you do? Like most of the people, you will go for a search engine. And in a moment, the desired web pages will be in front of your eyes. That’s the work a search engine does. Not confining itself in just searching web pages, it also searches images, videos and lot more from the databases stored on the entire World Wide Web.
Search Engines
There are billions and trillions of web pages available on the World Wide Web. No doubt most of them are full of some useful information but managing all of them or accessing them in order to find the needed web page is a daunting task and so rather impractical too. On the other hand, it becomes quite easy using a search engine. Search engines are the first stop for smart internet users to find out specific information or a website. Since the last decade, with the rapidly growing volume of web pages, search engines became an inseparable part of the World Wide Web.
If you are familiar with the internet and websites, you must have used a search engine too. Typically a search engine can be defined as – “A search engine is a sophisticated piece of software that can be accessed through a web browser and by accepting a search query from its users, it results a list of web pages related to the query.” It’s the algorithms that make all these executions in a flash of a second. But the process is much more complex than it seems.
How Search Engines Work?
A search engine incorporates a number of processes to bring out the desired results. These processes can be majorly divided into three different tasks:
1.      Web Crawling
Before a search engine is able to display a web page in its search result pages, it should know about that web page thoroughly. How does it know about web pages? Web crawling is the process that a search engine uses to get information about all web pages on the internet. And the part of the codes that does this is known as Spider or Crawler.
Crawlers continuously visit the web pages on the internet to get the entire content listed in the database of search engines. As there are billions of web pages, generally a search engine employ thousands of crawlers which keep visiting the whole World Wide Web day and night. By going on each web page, it reads every text from the page and stores them in a database known as search engine index.  During crawling, if any hyperlink is found then crawlers also visit that too. Hence they travel from one page to another until all the pages are crawled. In fact they never stop and revisit the pages to search any updates on the old pages.
When search engine crawlers visit an html page, they store all the texts (except the frequently used words like a, an, the, is, on, at, etc.) of the web page in to the index. Generally these two things are stored:
·         What text were found on the page
·        The corresponding Link of the webpage where that keyword were found.
Crawlers give much significance to the keywords that were found in the Title, Meta Tags of the web page.
Search Engine Crawling and Indexing
The below tool simulates a search engine crawler by displaying a webpage in a way, exactly a search engine crawler reads it:

2.      Indexing
After crawlers finish the crawling, they store the information from web pages in a repository known as Index. This process is generally referred as indexing. An index is the database which is used to provide the search results. It stores the keywords and the links of the web pages where that keyword was found. For example suppose that there are 4 keywords that were found on the 5 web pages. Then in a simplest form they will be stored something like this:
Keyword                               Web Pages
Apple                                      2, 4, 5
Ball                                          1, 4
Cat                                          3, 5
Dog                                         1, 3, 4
Where 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are the URLs of web pages.
Now if a user searches the term dog in the search engine then the web pages 1, 3 & 5 will be displayed in the search result page, where their order will be depend on the various factors including the frequency of keywords in the web pages.
To avail better results to its users, search engines stores more information about web pages than just keywords and the web pages. They can also store the frequency of the keywords they found, location of the keyword in the page, links of the web page associated with that keyword on other pages, etc. Each time a web page is crawled, the index is refreshed.
3.      Responding a Query
On searching just a simple keyword or a combination of keywords (called key-phrase), the entire index is checked to find out the associated web pages with the keyword/phrase. Web pages are sorted in an order of their corresponding weightage. Every search engine applies different criteria to determine the weightage hence every search engine displays different results for a similar query. Search engine also facilitate you to make more complex search queries by using the following Boolean operations:
·         AND – All the terms associated with ‘AND’ operation must appear in a web pages.
·         QUOTATION MARKS – A search term in quotation marks is treated as a complete phrase and in response to such a query, web pages that directly include that complete phrase are displayed.
·         OR – One of the terms joined with ‘OR’ operation should appear in the web pages.
·         NOT – NOT is used to display web pages without the term connected with the NOT operation.
·         FOLLOWED BY – The searched term must be followed by the other one.
Factors affecting Search Results:
A search engine display search engine result pages (commonly called SERPs) according to its Index. URLs stored in higher position in the index are displayed on higher rank in SERPs. Different search engines decide the index positions using different criteria; however these are some common factors that most of the search engine uses to decide the index positions:
·         Domain name is an important factor for all search engines. If the searched key phrase matches with a domain name, that page is indexed on higher position corresponding to that keyword/key phrase.
·         Web Pages with the searched term in its Page Title are stored on higher positions.
·         Crawler search the term in the URL itself and if found then its increase wightage for that web page.
·         Searched term in meta description, meta keywords & content.
·         Back links (A web page’s links found on other web pages) of the web pages.

Some Facts about Search Engines:
1.      Search Engine Optimization is a large business in the industry, where professionals work to bring web pages on higher position of the search engine result pages.
2.      Search Engines frequently change their algorithms in order to provide quality sites at the top.
3.      Google is now also facilitating users to conduct a search by an image or voice.
4.      Approximately 93% of total consumers use a search engine to find and access a website.
5.      85% users do not see after 1st page.
6.      The first result gets an average of 50% traffic, second gets 15-20% and tenth gets only 2-3% of the total traffic.
